2022 -The Living Earth

Band Directors-David Mobley, Steve Roeder, Cathy Benford, Isabelle Bouhadana

A new wind arranger, Vince Oliver, gives a fresh voice to the Dragon Band this season. Combined with excellent drill from Jeff Sacktig and always great percussion arranging from Colin McNutt, the band earned it’s highest competitive finishes in some time, making finals at BOA San Antonio and the UIL State Marching Contest.

The high cam view gives a great full view of all the action!

This year marks a huge departure for the band, from it’s black dragon uniforms to costumes that fit the show concept. This change, along with other changes in philosophy and preparation helped the group to succeed.

2021 - In the Shadow of Apollo

Band Directors-David Mobley, Steve Roeder, Brittany Graham, Cathy Benford

This video gives a great indication of just what it takes to perform a marching band in the current era. The combination of challenges, from choreography to drill to music, are deep and difficult. The best part of watching this particular performance is the energy level of the students. It gives the viewer a far greater appreciate for all that’s demanded of the students and a wonderful view of just how resilient and tough the group of students was in 2021.

2020 - We Could Be Heroes

Band Directors-David Mobley, Steve Roeder, Brittany Graham, Cathy Benford

2020, the year of Covid. The group’s performance and competitive season was cancelled. The fall semester was almost wholly distance learning, meaning students would log in to their classes online for the day’s lesson. For this program, the students sent in their recordings, both audio and video, which were then mixed by one of the staff members, Sean Harvey, into the production you see here. This is a very different kind of presentation for a high school band but doing things differently was required of everyone during this time. The message is inspiring, even looking back years later.

2019 - A Simple Gesture

Band Directors-David Mobley, Steve Roeder, Brittany Graham, Cathy Benford

2019 saw the addition of a new wind arranger, Frank Sullivan, and a new drill writer, Jeff Sacktig, and finally a new program coordinator, Rick Subel. These additions rebuilt the band’s marching design team. The program was a success at the BOA Grand Nationals, giving the group it’s fourth finalist appearance. The closer, from Saint Saens Organ Symphony was especially effective.

2018 - Dream

Band Directors-David Mobley, Steve Roeder, Brittany Graham, Cathy Benford

2018’s production includes music by Ravel, film composer John Barry and music group, Too Many Zoos. The group extended the use of props to a greater degree than every before, and used on field mics for the bari sax ensemble.

Updated band uniforms helped the group shine on the field at the UIL State Marching Contest once again.

2017 - Errand Into the Maze

Band Directors-David Mobley, Steve Roeder, John Peterson, Brittany Graham

2017 marks the band’s third appearance at the BOA Grand Nationals contest in Indianapolis. The group performed well with a very challenging program of Revueltas’ Sensamaya. 2017 marks the last year the full design team from 2010 was in place.

2016 - Triptych

Band Directors-David Mobley, Steve Roeder, John Peterson, Brittany Graham

The band was once again pleased to earn a spot in the UIL State Marching Contest this season. With more music from the ballet world, particularly Khachaturyan’s Adagio from Spartacus, this program combines a rich, royal feel with more sedate and romantic music to create a three part picture of the winter season.

2015 - Letter to the World

Band Directors-David Mobley, Steve Roeder, Josh Scott, Valerie Capporicci

Again inspired by Martha Graham’s source material, program designer Jude Boughton and the rest of the design team produced a show very true in spirit to the original ballet. Copland’s musical score is second to none and the students delved deep into the heart of the performance, earning the group it’s second finalist appearance at the BOA Grand Nationals in 2015.

2014 - Arabian Nights

Band Directors-David Mobley, Steve Roeder, Josh Scott, Valerie Capporicci

2014 was the largest competitive ensemble that Round Rock had fielded since the 1970s. The music was again cinematic in nature, with this particular performance coming at the UIL Area Marching Contest that year. A competitive let down at Area propelled the band to further success as finalists at the BOA San Antonio contest later that season.

2013 - Elemental Evolution

Band Directors-David Mobley, Steve Roeder, Josh Scott, Katie Van Doren

An incredibly fitting and superb combination of music, drill and general effect propelled the Dragon Band to its highest finish at the Bands of America Grand Nationals contest in 2013. This, combined with outstanding performances from the students, allowed this group to make an enduring mark for the band program at the national level. Music is from Copland, Menken, Ginastera, and Elfman.

2012 - The Raven

Band Directors-David Mobley, Steve Roeder, Josh Scott

The Raven is likely the most physically demanding shows the band has ever performed. It isn’t particularly long, at just over 8 minutes, but the closer, with it’s concentric jazz running woodwind circles and brass high step marching, followed by the show title spelled out in massive letters across the field, insure that this program’s visual demand was at the highest level.

2012 is the second year of the band earning a spot at the BOA San Antonio contest, clearing the way for a trip to Indianapolis in the fall of 2013.

2011 - Acts of Light

Band Directors-Ed Stein, Steve Roeder, David Mobley

2011’s show is based on a Martha Graham ballet of the same name, with music by Carl Nielsen. Martha Graham and her ballets are a theme the group would return to several times over the years. The design team returned once again to create a little more sophisticated and challenging musical and visual production. This year marks the first year the band earned a spot in the Bands of America San Antonio Super Regional, an event known for it’s extremely deep competitive field.

This performance is at halftime of the football game where the group had just returned from performing at BOA San Antonio earlier in the day. This same scenario has played out numerous times since then, with the Junior Varsity Marching Band taking over halftime duties at this particular game.

2010 - The Dragon

Band Directors-Ed Stein, Steve Roeder and David Mobley

This year marks several firsts for the band. The first year of a coordinated design team: Jeremy Hunt-drill writer, Jude Boughton-color guard director and program concept, Ryan George-wind arranger, Colin McNutt and Iain Moyer-percussion arrangers. This team would continue unaltered at Round Rock through 2017.

This is also the first year in the iconic black dragon uniforms. The team at Fred J Miller, led by Michael Cesario took the drawings submitted by a group of students and turned them into one of the most recognizable marching uniforms in the country.

Finally, 2010 marks the first year the band had performed at the UIL State Marching Contest since 1985.

2009 - Voltstryke

Band Directors-Ed Stein, Steve Roeder, David Mobley

2009 is the final year in this style of band uniforms. This program features music arranged by Ryan George, taken from several different video games that were popular at the time.

2008 - Dark Catalyst

Band Directors-Ed Stein, Steve Roeder, David Mobley

The band’s program this season was comprised of music by composer Key Poulan. Arrangements from several of his works were taken together to form the show. The band finished in 8th place at UIL Area this year.

2007 - Conspiracy Theory

Band Directors-Ed Stein, Steve Roeder, David Mobley

A dark sounding program from the band this season, to accompany a darker theme. Music is original from Key Poulan. This performance is halftime at an October football game and shows a great view of the front ensemble who is just as good as always. Also featured is a student voiceover to help support the show’s content, along with several soloists.
