Mulch Delivery is tomorrow!  If you have not yet signed up to help please do so today.  We have 600 deliveries and roughly 10,000 bags of mulch to deliver that day so we need YOUR HELP!!!!

Saxophones!  Houston Underground Competition!

    • Contestants must be currently enrolled in a high school or junior high school/middle school

  • Event Schedule and Categories

    • The Houston Underground Competition is scheduled for Saturday, May 17th, 2025, at Kerr High School in Houston, TX (8150 Howell Sugar Land Rd, 77083)

    • The competition will commence at 8:30 AM and conclude with the final performance at 5:30 PM.

    • This will be followed by the 2024 Winners Concert at 6 PM and a brief period for judges’ deliberation

    • The awards ceremony will take place immediately after the concert, around 6:30 PM

  • The competition is divided into three categories:

    • High School Quartet (2 rounds): This category is for saxophone groups with 3-6 participants

    • High School Soloist (2 rounds): This category is for solo saxophone and piano (when applicable)

    • Junior High Quartet (one round): This category is for saxophone groups with 3-6 participants in junior high

Opportunities for Small Ensembles and Chamber Groups

  • Please let me know if your group might be interested in performing and I will help coordinate with AGE

    • We're AGE of Central TX, a day-site for people with dementia and we're close-by. (Across from the park on Round Rock West Drive.)

    • We love it when young people (and educators) come and show their talents

    • If an ensemble has something they're working on or even a student or two wants to practice in front of a group, we would gladly welcome this

    • If you’re going into art therapy or music therapy you may sit in on arts and crafts or music with us sometime

All Students!

  • Silver Thistle Pipes and Drums is recruiting interested drummers and bagpipers!

  • Lessons are available for a fee if you are brand new to your chosen instrument. 

  • Silver Thistle is a non-profit organization which brings Scottish piping and drumming to the central Texas area

  • Silver Thistle was formed in 1977 and provides bagpipes and drumming lessons for people of all ages

  • Silver Thistle has been participating in pipe band competitions and performing in Texas and around the world for more than 45 years

  • We are dedicated to serving the greater Austin area through quality performances and education.

  • Under the leadership of Pipe Major Ken Liechti and Drum Sergeant Stephen Dick, our corps consists of many pipers and drummers who learned to play through our band’s own lesson system

  • We are a global community with members from Scotland, South Africa, and Canada, as well as our homegrown musicians. We are proud to represent Texas both locally and abroad.

  • Rehearsals are 6:30-8:30 on Monday nights at Austin Playhouse. 

  • Lessons are on Mondays from 8:00-9:00.

Grades

  • Students must remain academically eligible to participate in football games and marching contest performances and all TMEA activities. Should a student become ineligible they will still practice with the group during band class and in some cases, outside of the school day.

  • There are two types of official grade reporting - IPR (Interim Progress Report) and Report Card.  We are required to go by these official methods to determine eligibility.

  • The main thing to remember is  - ALL STUDENTS - PASS YOUR CLASSES TO REMAIN ELIGIBLE

Attendance

  • Look ahead at the rehearsal and event schedule and plan your appointments and tutorial help around it

  • Attendance at rehearsals and events is mandatory unless otherwise specified

  • Absences due to sickness are excused with notification from a parent if the student has a fever, is vomiting or cannot otherwise get out of bed

  • Absences due to prolonged sickness/injury are excused with a doctor's note

  • Who do I email?  Mr. Mobley for Varsity Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony and Concert Band 2, Ms. Benford for Junior Varsity Marching Band and Symphonic Band and Ms. Bouhadana for Concert Band 1, Mr. Hammack for all Percussion and Mrs. Stone for all Color Guard.
