Hello Dragon Band Students, Parents and Families,

We had a super week getting things done on our shows and it was wonderful that both of our competitive marching bands earned first division ratings from the judges at UIL, that is truly remarkable and not something that happens anywhere else!  WAY TO GO STUDENTS!!!

Friday 10.18, Football vs. Westwood @ Reeves, 7:00pm

  • 4:20pm School ends, EAT, refill DB water jug with water

  • 4:50pm Report to band hall, get in full uniform

  • 5:20pm Inspection in areas

  • 5:35pm On practice field waiting to board buses

  • 5:45pm Depart for Reeves

  • 6:15pm Arrive, unload, move into stands

  • 7:00pm Game begins

  • 8:15pm (approx) Halftime, “Confident” for Dragonettes, JV performs

  • 10:00pm (approx) Game ends, load and depart ASAP

  • 10:45pm (approx) Arrive, unload, store items properly and go home!

After the UIL Region Marching Contest, what’s next for the bands, JV and V?

  • JV

    • Perform one final time on Friday, November 8th at the game at Vandegrift

    • Transition to concert season - practice indoors on warm ups and spend time reading new music

    • Begin work on Holiday Concert music for Tuesday, December 3rd

    • Practice for TMEA region band auditions, Dec 13-14

    • Practice for spring semester auditions, to be held in early December

  • V

    • Perform on Nov 1 at the Stony Point Game

    • Perform on Nov 2 at UIL Area marching contest, aiming to be in the top 3

    • Perform on Nov 8 at BOA San Antonio prelims, aiming to be in the top 10

    • Possibly perform Nov 9 BOA San Antonio finals, must be in the top 14 from prelims

    • Possibly perform Nov 11 at UIL State Marching prelims, must have advanced from the area contest

    • Possibly perform Nov 12 at UIL State Marching finals, must be in the top 12 from prelims

      • Should the band advance to the UIL state contest, this will be an overnight trip, more details to come

Tri-M Music Honor Society

  • What is it?  It's the only national honor society for musicians. 

  • What requirements do I need to join?  Must be in 10th grade or above, and have a 4.0 in music (90+ average), and at least a 3.0 (85+ average) in other academic subjects.

  • How do I join?  Fill out this application

Austin Youth Wind Ensemble

  • This ensemble is designed to be an honor band that rehearses weekly on Sunday afternoons, with a performance in late April

  • Auditions for membership will be conducted via video submission based on the performance requirements outlined in the audition packets

  • Open for woodwind, brass, percussion student instrumentalists currently enrolled as 9th-12th graders in the greater Austin area

  • Performers must be enrolled in their school’s band program to participate

  • Attendance is mandatory, though scheduling conflicts may be discussed with Dr. Lebrias via email: mikelebrias@utexas.edu

  • Upon selection, each member will be assessed a $150 participation fee, which will cover sectional instructors, a commemorative T-shirt, sheet music purchasing & rental, as well as other associated expenses

  • The Honor Band of America is recognized as one of the top honor ensembles for young musicians in the nation, with a prestigious legacy and reputation for the highest level of excellence

Clarinet Day at Baylor University

  • Saturday November 16th, 2024

  • The Baylor Clarinet Day is aimed to help top high school students prepare their TMEA All-State etudes

  • In addition to a masterclass on the TMEA All-State etudes, students will get to participate in mock auditions, receive written feedback from our judges and partake in workshops helping them fine-tune their preparation process for auditions

  • Each week the V and JV winds will have class plans set up in this document

  • Use the tabs across the bottom for any given week

  • Students can look here to find out what we’ll be working on any given day

  • Things may change if the need arises to work on something else with the marching show but this will give you a good idea!

Region Listening Schedule

  • Each week the V winds and select JV winds will perform TMEA Region Etude selections for a director

  • The region etudes are divided into 4 parts, or “cuts” and 1 cut is performed each week

  • Region listenings generally happen on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays

  • Students can find the schedule here!

Grades

  • Students must remain academically eligible to participate in football games and marching contest performances and all TMEA activities. Should a student become ineligible they will still practice with the group during band class and in some cases, outside of the school day.

  • There are two types of official grade reporting - IPR (Interim Progress Report) and Report Card.  We are required to go by these official methods to determine eligibility.

  • The main thing to remember is  - ALL STUDENTS - PASS YOUR CLASSES TO REMAIN ELIGIBLE

Attendance

  • Look ahead at the rehearsal and event schedule and plan your appointments and tutorial help around it

  • Attendance at rehearsals and events is mandatory unless otherwise specified

  • Absences due to sickness are excused with notification from a parent if the student has a fever, is vomiting or cannot otherwise get out of bed

  • Absences due to prolonged sickness/injury are excused with a doctor's note

  • Who do I email?  Mr. Mobley for Varsity Marching Band and Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony, Ms. Benford for Junior Varsity Marching Band and Symphonic Band and Ms. Bouhadana for Concert Band, Mr. Hammack for all Percussion and Mrs. Stone for all Color Guard.

  • Absences that are not excused-birthdays, completing homework, test preparation, pop concerts, parties, vacations, weekend getaways
