Hello Next Year's Dragon Band!

If you are receiving this email, it means you (or your student) has said, "YES" to being in the Round Rock Dragon Band next school year and that's fantastic!  Welcome!  

This is the first of several emails you'll get over the coming months.  Our band boosters and I will both send messages throughout the school year.  These will begin coming to you as needed through this semester and during the summer, and then during the school year these messages will be available on the "Members" section of our website - dragonband.com and delivered directly to the Remind app on your phone.  We'll get to Remind later!


Bands of America Grand Nationals - Indianapolis, Indiana Trip Meeting

  • All are encouraged to attend who want to be in the Varsity Marching Band in the Fall, including incoming 9th graders

  • INCOMING STUDENTS AND PARENTS - I apologize that this is very short notice for you.  Our returning students have known about the meeting and it would benefit you to attend if you want to be in the Varsity Marching Band.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL

Parents new to high school band:

  • Your student is currently completing middle school and we'd like for them to focus on that and at the same time help them and you make a good transition to high school

  • There is a lot of information to take in, but it is better than too little so everyone has access to things they need or want to know

  • Take a deep breath, once you've done this for a year, you'll know what's going on

UIL Physical Requirement for Marching Band

EVERYTHING DAY

 – All parents and students attend.  Attendance is required.  See below for the time your section is assigned.

Everything Day is what it sounds like - a day where all students and parents come here to school to take care of everything - paperwork mostly, payments, a section meeting and introductions to booster leadership, various fundraising projects and other pertinent information.

  • Monday, May 12th  - 6:00pm Flutes and Clarinets; 7:00pm Saxophones

  • Tuesday, May 13th - 6:00pm High Brass; 7:00pm Low Brass

  • Wednesday, May 14th  - 6:00pm Percussion; 7:00pm Color Guard

  • RRHS Band Hall

Auditions 

Brass and Woodwind Auditions

  • Audition materials for all woodwinds and brasses will be released on Monday, March 7th

  • Auditions will take place the week of Monday, April 28th 

  • Incoming woodwinds, trumpets and trombones - Monday, April 28th starting at 4:30.  Students will be scheduled for an individual time

  • Incoming horns, euphoniums and tubas - Tuesday, April 29th starting at 4:30.  Students will be schedule for an individual time

  • Thursday, May 1st, make ups for any incoming students who missed Monday or Tuesday

  • Audition results will be posted on Friday, May 2nd

  • You’ll be placed in either JV or V marching band and preliminarily placed in one of the 5 concert bands for the spring semester.  We will re-audition in December for spring semester concert placement

The high school band directors hear all of the brass and woodwind students to place them in one of two marching bands and one of five concert bands. 

  • 1st/5th period band class is Wind Ensemble, our top band - Varsity Marching Band

  • 2nd/6th period is Wind Symphony - Varsity Marching Band

  • 3rd/7th is Symphonic Band  - Varsity Marching Band

  • 4th/8th is Concert Band - Junior Varsity Marching Band

During the FALL SEMESTER:

  • 1st/5th, 2nd/6th and 3rd/7th periods are the VARSITY BAND

  • 4th/8th period is the JUNIOR VARSITY MARCHING BAND.  Every student is in band class every day

Percussion Auditions

Mr. Hammock will be communicating with percussion students directly at the upcoming prep camps.  He will explain audition material and process.

ROCK DRUMS Prep Camps - at the Round Rock High School Band Hall  

  • Thursdays starting on January 23rd from 6:30-8:30pm at the RRHS Band Hall

ROCK DRUMS Pre Summer Camp - at the Round Rock High School Band Hall

  • Tuesday, May 27th - Friday, May 30th

  • 9:00am-4:00pm

  • Lunch on your own from Noon-1pm

Color Guard Auditions

Prep Camp & Auditions- starting in the band hall, moving to a gymnasium

  • Audition Prep - Tuesday and Wednesday, April 22nd and 23rd

  • Auditions - Thursday, April 24th

  • 5:00-7:30pm

  • Start in the band hall and then move to a gym

Pre Summer Camp - at the Round Rock High School Band Hall/Gyms

  • Tuesday, May 27th - Friday, May 30th

  • 9:00am-5:00pm

  • Lunch on your own from Noon-1pm

Incoming Parent Meeting

All parents new to the Dragon Band are strongly encouraged to attend our incoming parent meeting.  We will cover some of the same topics in this message in greater detail in addition to other information not outlined here.

Summer Band

Summer Band is mandatory, students must attend Summer Band, students must attend Summer Band

Summer Band is our time to make new friends and rejoin old friends, bond as a group, learn our marching shows, begin learning region music, and basically start the new year.  It is a four week program culminating in a parent performance.  Summer Band is held at the Round Rock High School Band Hall and in rooms around the campus - https://goo.gl/maps/25ozDz5U4c22

  • Saturday, August 2nd - Special VARSITY ONLY rehearsal, 7:00am-11:00am

Summer Band Week 3

  • 7:00am-3:00pm

  • Lunch on your own from Noon-1pm

  • Varsity members (including Guard/Dance) also attend Tuesday/Thursday from 6:00-8:30pm

Parent Preview - All members attend

  • Friday, August 8th

  • Dragon Stadium (indoors in a gym if raining)

  • Section Photos 5:00-6:00pm

  • Warm Up 6:00-7:00pm

  • Performances begin at 7:00pm

Special Saturday Event for Everyone

  • Saturday, August 9th

  • Band-A-Thon fundraiser

  • 8:00am-Noon

What to bring/wear to Summer Band

  • Returning members bring Dragon Band water jug

  • New members will get a Dragon Band water jug (filled) on the first day of summer band

  • Instrument and music

  • Comfortable clothing in which you can easily move-No Jeans

  • Hat-advisable to avoid sunburn

  • Sunscreen

  • Athletic shoes-VERY IMPORTANT to avoid injury from long term stress-No Sandals, No Flip Flops, No Vans, No Boat Shoes, No shoes with poor support
